Donald Trump will become the first former president in US history to face a criminal trial starting March 25. A judge in New York set this date on Thursday for the start of the trial against the right-wing populist over the hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels. The jury will be selected for the first time from March 25.
Judge Juan Merchan overruled the objections of Trump’s lawyers, who described the trial date as “election interference.” The trial will begin about seven and a half months before the presidential election, in which Trump aims to challenge incumbent Joe Biden.
The Republican was charged in March last year with paying $130,000 in hush money to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. It was the first criminal indictment against a former president in American history. This was followed by three more criminal charges against Trump, which included his efforts to subsequently overturn his 2016 election defeat to Democrat Biden.
Trump allegedly falsified company documents
In the hush-money case, New York’s Manhattan district attorney’s office is accusing Trump of falsifying business documents in 34 cases. The hush money that Trump’s then lawyer Michael Cohen paid to the porn actress was not in itself illegal. The reimbursement of the money to Cohen by Trump’s real estate empire is said to have been wrongly recorded as legal costs in numerous tranches.
Sex actress Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, said she had an affair with the married Trump in 2006, which he denies.
