Netanyahu tells Biden Israel will stop offensive on Gaza only when it achieves ‘all its objectives’

Date:

The Israeli Prime Minister and the US President have discussed a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, as part of negotiations between Israel and Hamas, at the proposal of the Palestinian organization.

Benjamin NetanyahuPrime Minister of Israel, has been transferred to the President of the United States, Joe Bidenthat the offensive against Gaza will not end until it has achieved “all its objectives,” a statement from his office said.

Both leaders spoke in the context of negotiations between Israel and Hamas on a ceasefire in Gaza, at the proposal of the Palestinian organization. “The prime minister informed President Biden of his decision to send a delegation to continue negotiations on the release of the hostages,” the statement said.

The proposal is “good,” according to a source close to the negotiations, quoted by Israel’s Channel 12, and could open the door to an agreement between the parties “within two or three weeks.”

Despite everything, the Israeli prime minister maintains his defense of achieving Israel’s goals sooner: the return of the 120 hostages kidnapped by Hamas who are still in Gaza, the elimination of Hamas’ military and governmental capabilities, and ensuring the return of civilians evacuated from Gaza’s northern and eastern southern borders.

Hamas assures that it is approaching the content of the ongoing deliberations “in a positive spirit” while the Israeli government evaluates the proposal.

According to Channel 12’s source, Hamas has withdrawn its demand ahead of any negotiations to end the war, the biggest stumbling block between Israel and the Islamists since the talks opened.

Sources close to Hamas, for their part, assure that Hamas remains steadfast in its goal of achieving a permanent ceasefire, but is showing more “flexibility” in negotiating the clauses over which both sides clash, the negotiations that both sides must conduct during the first phase of the agreement and in the transition to the second phase.

The first phase would see a complete ceasefire, with the withdrawal of Israeli troops and an exchange of hostages, both in the Gaza Strip and in Israeli prisons. The second phase would see a permanent ceasefire.
