Throughout Austria – Huge storm damage: cleaning work underway

Date:

Since the heavy storm, numerous emergency services have been busy with rescue operations and clean-up work throughout Austria. Tuesday morning was the first all-clear from weather experts. Nevertheless, in Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Styria, for example, streets that have burst their banks and are under water, numerous residential units, washed-out cellars and damaged buildings have to be put back into shape.

Mud, mudslides and floods: the storm caused devastation throughout Austria. Extensive clean-up work is currently underway in Carinthia. The Thörlbach overflowed due to heavy rainfall, flooding streets and flooding cellars. Because of the danger to the lives of the population, a civil protection alarm was temporarily activated.

Two disaster relief trains from Carinthia are currently supporting local emergency services in Lower Austria to secure a broken dam. In order to protect this settlement as best as possible, a wall with 3,500 sandbags was built in one night.

Careful, everything safe in Lower Austria
Tuesday was also the first all-clear in Lower Austria. Because the water level has largely dropped and the dams have not collapsed. The weather situation in Lower Austria should also slowly calm down.

Clean-up work has started in Salzburg
In Salzburg, there has also been a cautious zero since Tuesday morning. On Monday, a hiker was saved by a water rescue at the Wallersee because of the rising water level. According to the state fire brigade, a total of around 100 emergency services have been called, mainly because of flooded canals and seepage shafts. The clean-up work can continue for several more days.

Power outage prevented in Upper Austria
In Upper Austria, the heavy rainfall also caused numerous evacuations of flooded residential areas and individual homes. The emergency services have been busy with extensive clean-up operations since Tuesday. With large-scale pumping work, the fire brigade was able to successfully prevent a major power outage.

Rain is expected only on Tuesday, with most states likely to remain largely dry. As temperatures rise, the snow that has fallen in recent days will melt away over the next few days, but from a current perspective, no major problems are expected.
