First reactions – According to the short judgment: “Revaluation will take years”

Date:

The first reactions to the verdict against ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) are here. “The legal and political processing of the short years will take years,” emphasized Jan Krainer, SPÖ faction leader in the current Cofag-U committee and in the last two U committees (Ibiza, ÖVP corruption). Tyrolean FPÖ leader Markus Abwerzger has also spoken out.

“This is rather a smaller venue for the legal analysis of the Kurz system,” Krainer said.

And added: “The ‘Kurst era’ will keep the courts busy for years to come.” According to him, the other pending suspicions are serious and the presumption of innocence applies. “The judiciary is responsible for the legal assessment,” Krainer said. Politicians must restrain themselves.

“As ÖVP I would be very concerned”
Tyrolean FPÖ leader Markus Abwerzger spoke out shortly after the verdict was announced. “A guilty verdict for Kurz also means that Schmid is a credible (key) witness. If this is confirmed, then I as ÖVP and other involved parties (accused) would be very concerned about the further procedure,” he wrote on Twitter.

Short was given eight months’ probation
Kurz was sentenced in the first instance on Friday to an eight-month suspended prison sentence for making false statements in the Ibiza-U parliamentary committee. His former chief of staff, Bernhard Bonelli, was given a six-month suspended prison sentence for the same offense. There were also acquittals on certain points, such as the appointment to the board of directors of the state holding company ÖBAG. Both their prison sentences are conditionally suspended with three years’ probation.
