After the assault of a twelve-year-old with a total of seventeen suspects, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) called for measures. In the “Krone”, the Chancellor proposes to lower the age of criminal liability. Parties react differently to this initiative.
The defenselessness of the rule of law against such crimes is unbearable, Nehammer told the “Krone”. “We must speak relentlessly about what is going wrong and where the rule of law does not provide enough opportunities to intervene.”
For Women Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP), it is “inhumane and very disturbing” that a terrible image of women must prevail in the minds of the perpetrators, “which in this case is also imported through migration from other cultures.” She believes that age-based impunity is wrong for such “beastly, serious crimes.”
“The goal should be to prevent something like this from happening in the first place.”
Green Justice spokeswoman Agnes Sirkka Prammer called the 12-year-old’s case “shocking” and said everything must be done to clarify how this could have happened. Even when young people or even children commit crimes, there should be consequences.
There are laws for that. “But we do not believe in making appropriate legislation due to the justified shock of this act,” the Green Justice spokeswoman said. The goal should be to prevent something like this from happening in the first place.
FPÖ sees Nehammer as a ‘copying machine’
FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl in turn accused Nehammer of starting the ‘copy machine’. The Freedom Party has long and repeatedly demanded that age should not automatically be a license to get away with particularly serious crimes with impunity. As usual, the “pitchy media announcements” will not be implemented.
