After receiving a complaint from an individual, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has taken the decision to formally launch an investigation into alleged crimes such as embezzlement of public funds, deception and influence peddling.
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Monday that it has opened an investigation into alleged crimes of embezzlement of public funds, deception and influencing of contracts signed during the pandemic by the public health services of the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands for the delivery of masks to companies in the so-called plot Koldo case.
After receiving a complaint from an individual, The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has taken several measures to verify its competence to investigate the alleged events, such as collecting additional information from the Anti-Corruption Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Central Court No. 2, as well as from the various bodies responsible for the management of EU funding, as reported in a statement.
Based on the information collected, it has been decided to formally investigate alleged crimes of misappropriation of public funds, deception and influence peddling, in accordance with national law and the Regulation of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, the EPPO specified.
In the case of the Canary Islands Health Service, medical supplies were purchased for approximately €12 million, while in the case of the Balearic Islands Health Service this amounted to €3.7 million.
