A young American military member has been indicted in a major intelligence scandal. According to US media reports, he has now pleaded guilty at a hearing in the state of Massachusetts. Last June, Jack Teixeira pleaded not guilty.
According to media reports, the 22-year-old has now entered into an agreement with the Public Prosecution Service, under which he now faces a prison sentence of eleven to sixteen years. Teixeira was arrested in April 2023.
Passing on secret information
A federal grand jury indicted him on six counts of intentionally withholding and disclosing classified information for national defense. He initially faced a 10-year prison sentence in each of the cases, according to the Justice Department.
Teixeira joined the National Guard in September 2019 and was officially cleared to view top-secret government documents in 2021.

From January 2022, the IT specialist is said to have deliberately published information classified as ‘secret’ and ‘top secret’ in a closed chat room on the Discord platform popular among video gamers. From there they spread via the Internet until authorities and the media became aware of them. The leak did not become public until the spring of 2023.
