The Spanish government assumes that there may be no budgets this year due to the elections in Catalonia

Sources from Moncloa confirmed to EITB Media that they are committed to “realism in the face of staggering events.”

The President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, has decided not to present budgets for this year and to now work on the budgets for 2025. Sources from Moncloa have confirmed to EITB Media that they are committed to “realism in the face of staggering events. “

Sánchez had expressed his belief that budgets would be introduced this year, but after the electoral movement in Catalonia he assumed that this would entail a significant delay in negotiations and therefore in the approval of budgets, if applicable.

It therefore ultimately decided not to do so and opted for a postponement of a few months in the dialogue with the groups to ensure that the 2025.

Government sources have assured that the absence of budgets has no bearing on the situation stability of the legislature and Sánchez’s determination to exhaust it and therefore extend it until 2027.

Shortly before, the First Vice President of the Spanish Government, Mary Jesus MonteroI assumed that the electoral progress in Catalonia “it changes the political administration” and it can no longer be ruled out that there will be no general state budget in 2024 and that we will have to wait for the approval of next year’s budget.

Montero referred to the electoral advance in Catalonia in statements to journalists after the opening of a day organized by the consultancy Thinking Heads and on which he coincided with the former government president Mariano Rajoy and the former leader of the PSOE, former European Commissioner Joaquín Almunia.

The vice-president and deputy general secretary of the PSOE has stressed that the early elections “can undoubtedly change the political situation”, although she has indicated that she has not yet received any information from the Catalan parties and, in particular, from ERC and Junts on the budget negotiations.

“But at this point I cannot rule out any problem as I insist that this moves the political table again,” he added.

“If they were not possible, if we could not present them before the year 2024, which as you know is only a limited time because the year is progressing, then very important work has been prepared for the next one,” Montero stressed.
