29th World Climate Conference – “Nuclear energy is now used in a very targeted manner”

Date:

The 29th World Climate Conference starts on November 11 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. “After Dubai, another rich oil state will host the conference. The starting position can of course be improved,” says environmental journalist Mark Perry from Krone in the live talk of krone.tv.

At the last world climate conference in Dubai, the world community agreed for the first time to phase out fossil fuels. Now it is a fundamental decision about which energy we will use and whether the energy transition is going fast enough, says Perry, who travels to Baku for the “Krone”. This will also lead to a renaissance of nuclear energy, which is already visible worldwide. “It should serve as a replacement. Nuclear energy is now used in a targeted and conscious manner to solve energy problems. In my opinion that cannot happen.” Yet the nuclear lobby will be present again in Baku: “They praised it there as the energy of the future.”

Trillions for climate finance
Another important topic at this year’s conference is climate finance. Until now, the agreement was that the richer countries would provide $100 billion per year to developing countries. But the money won’t be enough. “Experts speak of trillions.” What is especially annoying, according to Perry, is that China and India, who are not in these circumstances, want to negotiate even more from the West.

American elections are also climate elections
The US elections will also be crucial for climate protection. Outgoing US President Joe Biden has made the issue of climate protection the focus of his presidency. In Alaska, for example, oil pipelines and drilling were halted. “But you can’t transform a huge country like America as easily as Vorarlberg,” says Perry. “He’s on the right track, but it could all come crashing down if Trump comes back.” If Trump returns, Greenpeace expects four billion tons of additional CO2 emissions by 2030.
