In the stalled coalition talks in the Netherlands, right-wing populist Geert Wilders was initially prepared to relinquish the premiership. After all, the Dutchman wants to save the difficult government negotiations.
His Freedom Party (PVV), together with three other conservative parties, investigated a scenario in which the party leaders would remain MPs, NOS reported on Wednesday.
Wilders himself said on Platform X that he could only become prime minister if “ALL” parties supported it. That is not the case. He further wrote: “The love for my country and my voters is great and more important than my own position.”
An exemption with an expiration date
To then continue in another post: “And don’t forget: I still remain Prime Minister of the Netherlands. With support from even more Dutch people. If not tomorrow, then the day after tomorrow. Because the voices of millions of Dutch people are heard!”
Wilders has failed to form a coalition since the elections in November. During the election campaign he announced that he would halt all immigration, cut Dutch EU payments and prevent new members such as Ukraine from joining. He also rejects Islam and does not want to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine.
