Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has protested a decision by the Chamber of Deputies in Rome to set up a commission of inquiry into the corona pandemic. A bill to set up this committee was approved by the Chamber of Deputies on Thursday.
The commission must investigate whether the government around Conte took all necessary measures at the beginning of the 2020 pandemic to contain the spread of the corona virus. Italy was the first Western country where the pandemic spread.
The committee, which has yet to be approved by the Senate, is intended to clarify any government omissions. The Conte government is suspected of failing to close off particularly affected areas in the northern Italian province of Bergamo in March 2020 as so-called red zones to contain the spread of the virus, researchers said.
Italy with many corona deaths
With more than 185,000 Covid deaths, Italy is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic in the world.
“I am not afraid. I will prove that the decisions I made were well thought-out, reasonable and fully appropriate to the emergency,” Conte, head of the opposition Five Star Movement party, said, according to media reports on Sunday. He denied that his government intervened too late to stop the spread of the pandemic, he had always acted “with the utmost commitment and a full sense of responsibility in the interests of the Italians”.
“This assignment is a farce. It has only one purpose: to create a political tribunal to punish members of previous governments,” said Roberto Speranza, health minister in the Conte government. Proceedings have been opened against both Conte and Speranza for their management in the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic in the province of Bergamo, but proceedings have since been halted.
