The violent storms with heavy rain on Saturday evening in the municipality of Afritz am See (Carinthia) led to roadblocks, mudslides, flooded basements and courtyards. Firefighters worked late into the night. A fisherman’s hut was moved behind the Afritzer See by a mudslide, people were trapped for a short time.
The national road Millstätter (B98) in the vicinity of Afritz am See was flooded within a short time. At around 6.25 pm there was a mudslide in the Untersee 4 area, which buried the B98 under rubble and made it impassable for traffic. A roadblock had to be set up, as more mudslides and smaller landslides moved through the bodies of water. “It was very critical for an hour,” said the emergency services.
People locked in fisherman’s hut
Behind Lake Afritz, several people were trapped in a fishing hut because a mudslide had misplaced everything. That is why the police helicopter “Libelle” was requested for a reconnaissance flight. The people could then walk out of the danger zone and get to safety. The roadblock was not lifted until 1:10 am. Fortunately no one was injured.
“The Afritzer Bach has burst its banks in some places, two smaller streams and surface water from a freshly mown meadow have also flooded the Schwarzseestraße, flooding ten cellars and courtyards,” reports Mayor Maximilian Linder, who also dealing with the BH Villach-Land Disaster Advisors had coordinated the operation. The surface water had developed a violence that no one had expected.
Nevertheless, material damage must be limited. The Feld am See fire brigade deployed three vehicles and 36 men, Afritz am See also deployed three vehicles and 34 men, and the Arriach and Einöde-Winklern fire brigades also deployed several vehicles and 34 men.
