Companies in Gipuzkoa are facing “moderate optimism” this year after a “difficult to manage” 2022, but which, at the level of activity and results, shows a “positive overall balance”, according to the report on the economic situation of 2023 which was presented today by the Gipuzkoa Chamber. In addition, Gipuzkoa’s economy is expected to grow between 1 and 1.5%, fundamentally supported by the industrial sector.

This morning the Chamber of Gipuzkoa presented the report with the results of the Outlook survey to which several hundred companies in the area responded.

28% of companies in the industry expect their sales to improve from the previous year, while 54% expect to match the results. Of the rest of the sectors (construction, trade and services), only retail is showing more modest results than in 2022, with 32% of companies expecting to remain at a lower turnover rate, versus 21% expecting to increase it.

Exports are a source of confidence for Gipuzkoa’s economy. In 2022, exports have set a historic record, crossing the 10,000 million euro mark for the first time. Looking ahead to this year, despite more modest forecasts for global economic growth, the Chamber of Gipuzkoa is confident that exports will set new records.

In terms of employment, the majority bet on maintenance or modest creation. 84% of them argue in favor of retaining or expanding the workforce in the
year 2023, with more indicating they will increase their workforce (18%) compared to those indicating a downsizing (14%). Industry points to better results, while trade is the only sector predicting a reduction in employment.

The lack of personnel, the need to increase sales in non-European markets, the recovery of margins and the need to maintain a competitive territory are the main strategic challenges that companies in Guipuzkoa identify.
