The first renaming of a Nazi street in Salzburg is progressing: city politicians want to lay the foundation for it next week. The new name for the small street in Parsch has already been determined.
The eight house numbers on Heinrich-Damisch-Straße have 34 people registered, some for decades. In addition, four companies have their headquarters in the small street in Salzburg-Parsch. They will all receive a new address at the beginning of 2025. As was known – as the ‘Krone’ reported – the namesake of the street, Heinrich Damisch, was a fervent anti-Semite and National Socialist.
After years of discussions, city politicians are getting serious about renaming the first NS street. Mayor Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ) will sign a corresponding report tomorrow, Monday. The culture committee will vote on it on Thursday. A majority seems certain. KPÖ Plus and Bürgerlist have already agreed on this in the city council’s work program. The ÖVP under city representative Florian Kreibich was always against a name change.
Damisch denigrated Reinhardt and von Hofmannsthal
“The end of the Second World War will be 80 years old in 2025. It is an important and right step to now start renaming a street named after a person affected by Nazism,” says Auinger. Historians of the city have chosen actress and director Helene Thimig as the new namesake.
Thimig was the wife of Max Reinhardt and appeared on stage as “Glaube” at the Jedermann premiere in 1920. In 1938 she had to follow Reinhardt into exile. She died in Vienna in 1974. Damisch, on the other hand, co-founded the festival but denigrated Max Reinhardt and Hugo von Hofmannsthal during the Nazi era.
Auinger had invited the residents of the street in Parsch on Friday to talk to Mirabell Castle. It was constructive. The city promises full support for the change in 2025. Those affected will receive a guide and reimbursement for all costs.
