Political and social actors are demanding the acquittal of Etcheverry and Molle

Date:

More than 4,000 officers from various social and political domains have supported the petition. They believe that the trial of Etcheverry and Molle, which will take place on April 2 and 3, is contrary to the pacification process.

On the occasion of the trial against Txetx Etcheverry And Beatrice Molle Next week, several political, trade union and social actors in Paris will appear before the Paris criminal court to demand the acquittal of the two activists, known as ‘artisans of peace’. After praising their commitment to peace, they declared that this process is going “in the opposite direction of pacification.”

Etcheverry and Molle, who also took part in the press conference this afternoon, were arrested together with three other activists during the police operation carried out on December 16, 2016 in Luhuso. The French anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office requested in February last year that they be tried before the Paris Criminal Court on charges of possession of weapons, ammunition and explosives, and for their links to ETA. Both could be sentenced to ten years in prison and a fine of 100,000 euros.

In their appearance today, they emphasized that Luhuso’s initiative was intended to help “dismantle the arsenals,” despite “the limited initiative of Paris and Madrid.” “They continued along the path of repression, applying a policy of dispersal and exception against Basque prisoners and preventing ETA from safely destroying its arsenal.”

They added that the “artisans of peace” were “pioneers” in building “a new perspective for Euskal Herria.” However, they believe that there is still “a long way to go towards lasting peace”, and in this sense they argue that condemning these two activists goes against the process of pacification and reconciliation. Molle would help open the “definitive page” and “solve together the consequences of the armed confrontation.”

Three other people were also arrested in the Luhuso operation: Stephane Etchegaray Etxe, for whom the Public Prosecution Service has requested an exculpation, and Mixel Berhokoirigoin and Mixel Bergougnan, both died in 2021 and 2017 respectively.

More than 4,000 agents from different social and political fields supported today’s appearance.
