Not yet known – WKStA: Decision on Schmid’s status as a key witness

Date:

The Public Prosecution Service for Economic Affairs and Corruption (WKStA) has made a decision on the clemency application of the ex-board member of the state holding company ÖBAG, Thomas Schmid. However, how the decision was made is still a secret.

A spokesperson for WKStA confirmed that a project report had been sent ‘upwards’ – i.e. to the public prosecutor’s office – shortly before Easter. How the decision was made is not communicated. The Public Prosecution Service must now investigate the project and forward it to the Ministry of Justice.

Schmid charged ÖVP grandees
The former Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Thomas Schmid, has made an extensive confession to the WKStA in several interviews, severely incriminating himself and prominent ÖVP representatives – including ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz – in several cases.

Decision also in the CASAG case
In the CASAG case, which has been under investigation since 2019, a project report from the WKStA was forwarded to the Public Prosecution Service before Easter. The case surrounding the partially state-owned Casinos Austria AG (CASAG) concerns a suspected deal within the turquoise blue Kurz I government in the gambling sector.

There would have been an ÖVP-FPÖ agreement to send Peter Sidlo, who is close to the Freedom Party, to the CASAG board on a ticket from CASAG co-owner Novomatic – although he reportedly had few qualifications for this position. In return, the FPÖ is said to have indicated, among other things, that it is willing to accommodate any changes in the law regarding small-scale gambling after the elections in Vienna.
