The current ‘TV duel’ between Andreas Mölzer and Eva Glawischnig on krone.tv was, among other things, about the re-election of Michael Ludwig as state party chairman of the Vienna SPÖ. Eva Glawischnig summarizes: “The entire party congress was a sign of strength.”
“There were over 900 delegates, over a thousand people. Also this unity they demonstrated, Babler and Ludwig. Everyone of rank and name was present: Vranitzky, Häupl, absolutely everything. Babler gave a very emotional speech, but in terms of content it was a very election campaign. Demand everything without saying how it should be calculated. Everything that will be beautiful and desirable in the future has already been promised. The state is responsible for everything. Because that is our right and our claim. I was very curious to see how that would work, but by then Babler’s speaking time was already over,” says Glawischnig.
Ludwig, strongman of the social democracy
Andreas Mölzer adds: “It was already a demonstration of Red Vienna, which still exists. Even if it is actually only in the remaining supplies. But at the same time it was also a demonstration of the new strong man in Austrian social democracy. This is the mayor of Vienna, there is no doubt about that. He also has stature, it must be said. If you follow the line of Kreisky’s party leaders, then Ludwig is already a personality. Babler is obviously fighting, as his test lies ahead of him in the National Council elections. But the Vienna SPÖ is still the determining factor for social democracy in Austria.”
A coalition of two parties is no longer possible
In general, however, one could conclude from current research that the Vienna SPÖ is not what it once was. Glawischnig: “A two-party coalition will no longer be possible given current polls. They are still far from forty percent. Even if they wanted to continue the coalition with the NEOS, they would need a third party.” Andreas Mölzer and Eva Glawischnig have ruled out a coalition with the FPÖ, which would be enough to get sufficient mandates even with two people.
