For Sunday’s second election, the electoral authority announced that the election results would be announced earlier: around 6 p.m. you should know who the new mayor of Innsbruck is. The aftermath of the first election Sunday continues: ORF Tirol apologizes for a “graphical glitch”.
The first election Sunday in the Innsbruck city library was strange and sometimes somewhat chaotic: initially the election evening dragged on like a strudel. Despite BM Georg Willi’s announcement that there would be no interim results before 7pm, they continued to trickle in from 5pm.
When the final result was finally announced, there was none. The head of the electoral authority, Ferdinand Neu, was in the taxi and delivered the taxi late, but personally – even though it was also broadcast digitally, as he emphasized in the ‘Krone’ interview.
Graphic showed 120 percent
In the general hustle and bustle, the ORF Tirol created a false image that was only visible on the screens for a few seconds, but – as reported – resulted in a “review request” from GR Depaoli of “Judge Innsbruck”.
No early announcement of results
Problems were suspected with data transfer from the 154 constituencies. But he is not aware of this, says Neu: “Immediate reports from the constituencies are forwarded by telephone to the election office in the town hall and are immediately checked for mathematical accuracy. The district election management then appears with the entire election file at the election office, where further checks take place.”
The main electoral authority can rule out that data was passed on to third parties before the results were announced: “All members of the main electoral authority – a chairman, two judges of the regional court and six evaluators of the factions with the highest votes in the last election – are obliged by law to maintain confidentiality.”
ORF image without reference to the election authority
How did ORF get the wrong graphics? “This test chart, created for technical examples, had no relation to election authority data. It was not intended for publication,” says Georg Laich, editor-in-chief of ORF Tirol. “The graph in question was only shown briefly, was immediately removed and replaced shortly afterwards with the correctly created visualization.”
There are no more 13 lists this time
The live broadcast, which started at 7 p.m., ended without results. The reason was the delay of the electoral authority: “Due to the high number of 13 candidates for the mayoral elections, the 13 electoral groups that were active and the possibility of casting preferential votes for more than 800 electoral proposals, the counting at the district constituencies increased takes some time. above average time to complete,” says Neu.
