In an interview with krone.tv, president Ingrid Korosec of the seniors’ association comments on the numerous problems that digitalization poses for the older generation: “It goes much further than that. Because problems with digitalization affect everyone. Many people are unable to master digitalization.”
Everyone has a smartphone and surfs. But there is a difference between whether you are really digitally fit. “For example, to be able to communicate digitally with authorities or to do other things digitally. And 30 to 40 percent of people can’t do that.”
There must also be analog paths
In general, the chairman of the seniors’ association also emphasizes the many benefits of digitalization. For example, being able to make trips from home if mobility is already limited. Or be able to talk to friends via Skype and save yourself the hassle of traveling. Korosec: “That’s why I’m such a fan of digitalization, especially for the older population. I always say this is the gateway to the world. That’s one possibility. But there must also be another analogue option. Because many people cannot digitize. Also because they have never had anything to do with it professionally. This means that many people do not get to grips with digitization.”
Older people often have difficulty typing. There are countless things that lead to our exclusion from digitalization. Korosec: “It is discrimination if you only do some things for a certain part of the population.” Therefore, there must be analogous ways to achieve the goal. This is a demand that the chairman of the Senior Citizens Association will not abandon.
Loneliness is a big problem
Another explosive and stressful problem for the older generation is loneliness. Many people are lonely and cannot get away from there. Korosec proposes more active residential communities to provide relief so that people can have contacts even at an older age. Or attempts to bring young and old together. For example, grandma picks up the grandchildren or helps with studying.
