The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchezassured on Tuesday that the Executive will address denials of compensation to victims of the Liberation Anti-Terrorist Group (GAL) and from Spanish Basque Battalion (BVE) because they were confirmed by the Spanish and European courts.

This is how Sánchez reacted to the PNV parliamentarian in the plenary session of the Senate Estefania Beltran de Herediawho asked if the Spanish government would review the refusal of recognition and compensation to unconvicted victims of the GAL, the Spanish Basque Battalion and far-right groups.

In the opinion of the senator, there has been discrimination against some of the people who claimed compensation under the law. “It doesn’t treat victims the same,” Beltrán de Heredia claimed before stating that many of those applicants, who have not been convicted, are entitled to compensation.

However, Sánchez wanted to make it clear that the Spanish government has acted in accordance with the law, as confirmed by both the National audience as the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)thus “there is no room for any assessment by the government of Spain”.

A response the PNV senator regretted hearing, who has insisted that it is in the hands of the Executive to correct these situations that “they are dishonest”

Meanwhile, Sánchez has stressed that the Justice Department has upheld the Interior Ministry’s denials and has even ordered the plaintiffs to pay the charges.

“The rejection of the petitions is in line with the law. It is what the government of Spain believes. There is no scope for the review of administrative acts that have become firm in the justice system,” he noted.
