79 years after the liberation of the concentration camps, so-called “career criminals,” “antisocial” and “criminal” concentration camp prisoners are still recognized as victims of National Socialism. The ÖVP, Greens and SPÖ submitted a corresponding motion to the National Council on Thursday.
However, it is only a symbolic gesture. “Because we have to assume that there are no more survivors,” historian Eva Blimlinger of the Green Party said in a broadcast.
Under National Socialism, “antisocials” meant people who were deemed unable or unwilling to fit into the community. This mainly concerned social minorities such as the homeless, migrant workers, prostitutes and addicts. ‘Career criminals’ were repeat offenders.
Here you will see a statement from the Minister of Social Affairs about X.
“Even if there are probably no survivors left, the amendment to the Victims’ Welfare Act makes it clear that serious injustice has been done to these people,” said Minister of Social Affairs Johannes Rauch (Greens). Compensation has been postponed for far too long.
Currently, certain groups of people are not entitled to an official certificate or a victim card. This concerns, for example, people who have been sentenced to a prison sentence of more than six months. These restrictions have now been removed.
“At this point I would like to read Andreas Kranebitter’s recently published book, The Construction of Criminals. Recommend the incarceration of career criminals in the Mauthausen concentration camp. And I hear that a memorial plaque for this group of victims is also being prepared at the Mauthausen Memorial,” Blimlinger said in a broadcast.
