“Good life for everyone” – Babler wants to be social for every age group

Date:

At a press conference on Wednesday, SPÖ leader Andreas Babler promised a “future guarantee for all generations” if the Social Democrats win the next federal government. Together with the chairman of the Socialist Youth, Paul Stich, and Birgit Gerstorfer, chairman of the Upper Austrian Pensioners’ Association, he spoke out against playing off young and old, in favor of the rights of children and against pension cuts.

If you have the pocket money, you can feel free to take out additional private insurance, Babler said: “But the Social Democrats are the guarantee that you can live on your statutory pension,” Gerstorfer agreed. She spoke out in favor of safeguarding pensions in general, protecting their level and respecting the retirement age of 65. Stich advocated a ‘good life for everyone who works now and everyone who has worked’.

SPÖ leader promises “right to analogue life”
Babler criticized age discrimination, for example because applications for the repair bonus are only available online. “The SPÖ will put an end to this condescension,” he emphasized, promising free paper invoices and a general “right to an analogue life.”

Babler mentioned children’s rights as another issue that should be demanded. At the moment, it depends on the zip code whether you get equal opportunities, he criticized the ÖVP-led states. On the asylum issue – most recently the residency requirement, a conflict issue between SPÖ proponents in Vienna and Burgenland – he spoke in favor of a legally regulated division between the federal government and the states, linked to financial equalization funds. If there is no established understanding here in Austria, it cannot be demanded at European level, he said.

Probably not coincidentally, given the turbulence of the Greens, Babler also mentioned the fight against global warming as a priority, especially against “profit-driven global warming”. The tipping points have already been irreversibly crossed, but there is a right to an intact planet. It is a ‘social distribution battle that must be waged’.

Babler calls for a binding climate protection strategy
He did not want to comment on specific measures such as 100 km/h on highways or cuts in travel allowances. What is needed is a binding climate protection strategy that the Greens have not been able to enforce against their coalition partner ÖVP; more than 1,000 days – keyword Climate Protection Act. Babler promised that there would be a binding CO2 savings strategy with the SPÖ.
