Date:

The popular Ursula von der Leyen, the social democrat Nicolas Schmit, the liberal Sandro Gozi, the ‘green’ Terry Reintke and the left-wing Walter Baier have debated. Von der Leyen has said she views Meloni as “pro-European” and will work with her in the next term.

The heads of the list of five of the most important European political parties faced this Thursday their proposals and diagnoses in areas such as defense, agriculture or migration in the last major debate before the elections for the European Parliament from June 6 to 9, though without far-right or ultraconservative candidates.

They have debated the popular Ursula von der Leyenthe social democrat Nicholas Schmitthe liberal Sandro GoziThe green” Terry Reintke and the left Walter Baier.

Von der Leyen said that regards Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as “pro-European”from the far right, and has confirmed his intention to work with her if she remains pro-Ukraine and pro-rule of law in the next term.

Schmit has warned Von der Leyen that the “Red line‘ of the socialists to work with her will be her approach to the far-right groups Conservatives and Reformists and Identity and Democracy, which she does not consider to be ‘democratic forces’.

Gozi He has also criticized the fact that “they are willing to open up” to agree with the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group into which Vox and Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy are now integrated. “They are absolutely against Europe, they want to dismantle Europe from within and we must fight against it,” he declared.

The Greens candidate has also warned that if the Popular Party joins forces with the Conservatives and Reformists “the entire Green Pact would be declared invalid”, which, as she complained, would be a “disaster for future generations”. Reintke has asked the Liberals to now give a “clear signal” and expel the PVV from their group.

In the same line, Bavarian has pointed out that the way to ‘counter’ populist discourses is to ‘exclude the agenda and arguments of the far right from public discourse’.
