There is enormous sympathy for the death of Austria’s first female chancellor, Brigitte Bierlein. Current Chancellor Karl Nehammer also expressed his shock. In memory of the 74-year-old, he had a memorial table set up on his own initiative in the chapel of the Federal Chancellery (BKA).
On the altar in the chapel, a black and white photo with a black bow commemorates Austria’s first female chancellor. Next to it burns a white candle, decorated with white roses.
“Excellent personality”
“It was a personal concern of the Chancellor that Brigitte Bierlein was given a dignified place in the BKA, where every employee could take a break and reminisce about this special personality,” the chancellery said.
Halfraised flag
For Nehammer, Bierlein was a “great role model”. The Austrian flag on the roof of the Federal Chancellery is now flying at half-mast. Minister of Chancellery Susanne Raab has also already visited the chapel.
With Bierlein, Austria loses a pioneer who has had a decisive influence on the republic for generations, Nehammer emphasized.
Compassion for all parties
Top politicians from all parties had already expressed shock at the death of Austria’s first female chancellor. Bierlein’s predecessor and successor as chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, also spoke.
Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and Archbishop Franz Lackner, president of the bishops’ conference, also expressed their “great condolences.” The cardinal emphasized that special thanks go to Bierlein for her many years of volunteer work for the Independent Commission for the Protection of Victims.
