There are currently two opposing referendums underway in Austria, each of which can be answered with yes or no. Either you sign the document asking whether you are in favor of Austria leaving the EU. Or the one where you are asked if you are against it.
These two referenda have been ready for signature for several weeks. Co-initiator of the referendum Werner Bolek said: “So far, tens of thousands of people have signed. 64 percent of them said yes to leaving the EU, 36 percent said yes to staying in the EU. If these were not two opposing referendums, but one official referendum, the result would be Austria’s departure from the EU.”
But no one in Austrian politics dares to ask this question. Bolek: “The initiators of such a referendum probably know what the outcome would be. That is why there are always only surveys with small samples about the EU, but never a real referendum. Hence our two opposing referendums, which to some extent mirror a referendum.”
These two referendums will now last many months; the value announced today is the current interim status of both requests.
