He Polloe Cemetery in Donostia-San Sebastian has this Sunday been the scene of a act of tribute and reparation for the republican gudaris buried in the Franco mausoleum of said cemetery, according to a note from the Basque government.
A plaque with the names of the 17 identified militants will remember the buried Republicans, along with a replica of the “Duintasuna” sculpture. About thirty family members attended the act of remembrance and tribute promoted by the Basque government and the Donostia-San Sebastián City Council. On the political side, José Antonio Rodríguez, Deputy Minister for Human Rights, Memory and Cooperation of the Basque Government, Eneko Goia, Mayor of Donostia and Aintzane Ezenarro, Director of the Institute of Memory, Society and Human Rights – Gogora, among others, attended.
The event aims to “contribute to give new meaning to the place and worthy of the memory of republican fighters buried in that mausoleum, erected to house and honor the remains of rebel fighters,” said the note from the Basque government. replica of the “Duintasuna” statue, by the sculptor Iñigo Arregi, completes the series of memories.
Mayor Eneko Goia stressed in his speech that “we continue with this redefinition pay off debts with those who fought for our freedoms and those of our city. In this way, we are carrying out an exercise in historical memory to restore the dignity that corresponds to this place, and we continue to restore spaces to remember and repair the damage that Francoism has done to our city”.
For his part, Deputy Minister Jose Antonio Rodríguez has referred to the fact that from now on the place will no longer be a Francoist mausoleum in honor of the fallen, but a “symbol of democratic memory”.
The decision to choose to redecorate the place was taken after the historical research and state prospecting of the remains carried out by the Aranzadi Science Association, promoted by the city council and Gogora. It is concluded from this that the possibility of the identifications and subsequent recovery of the remains of the at least 17 Republican victims buried in this mausoleum is not feasible. It is estimated that this Franco mausoleum houses the remains of about 200 people in total.
