Renaturation Act – Why six EU countries voted against the bill

Date:

Twenty member states voted in favor of the renaturation law in the Council of the EU. Belgium abstained from voting. Finland, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Sweden and the Netherlands voted against. The “Krone” investigated why these countries do not support the bill.

The EU renaturation law has been causing conflict and tension in EU countries for months. It has now been approved by both the European Parliament and recently also by the Council of the EU. The required approval from fifteen Member States, representing 65 percent of the EU population, was barely obtained. The decision was close because the representatives in the EU Parliament are divided according to the population of the individual countries and therefore not every country has the same number of votes.
