Tuition fees for students from the war-torn country, which has been abolished since the start of the current war in Ukraine, will not have to be paid at public universities and colleges in the winter semester of 2024/2024.
Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) recently extended a corresponding exemption again. The universities and PH will receive compensation from the ministry for the resulting shortage.
“Even after 2.5 years, the end of the war in Ukraine is unfortunately not yet in sight,” the minister explained the decision. Since the summer semester of 2022, Ukrainian students enrolled in one of the 22 public universities or the 14 teacher training (PH) universities in Austria are exempt from this tuition requirement.
Ukrainians save 726.72 euros per semester
Thanks to the corresponding change in the tuition fee scheme, which Polaschek submitted for review on Friday, Ukrainians will save 726.72 euros per semester. This is the amount that third-country nationals normally have to pay per semester, twice the regular tuition fee.
Many technical colleges and private universities are offering their own support measures.
