According to EH Bildu’s spokesperson in the Basque parliament, “now is the moment” to move the debate on self-government forward. To do this, he believes, it is necessary to clarify what the starting point is, something has been missed in the PNV-PSE agreement.
“The PSE-EE has clearly expressed its position on the self-government debate in the investiture debate. The PNV has not done so. Our concern is that the PSE-EE is taking the lead on this issue.” They are words of Otxandiano hair, spokesperson for EH Bildu in the Basque Parliament, when asked about the challenges that the legislature in the Basque Parliament has just begun to face. He believes that it is time to delve deeper into self-government, for which he considers it essential to clarify the premise that will define the ground of this debate. In this sense, he has once again contacted the newly appointed Lehendakari Imanol Pradales.
According to Otxandiano, self-government has been “significantly devalued and mutilated” in recent years, a reflection that, he argued, should be at the beginning of the debate. “I believe that the basic principles agreed upon during the Self-Government Presentation in 2018 provide a good basis. From there we should reach a consensus in the Basque parliament itself.”
The sovereigntist leader has expressed concern that he did not see during the investiture session what position the new executive would take on the issue. “I can understand that position now that the differences between the PNV and the PSE-EE in this area are so great, but the question is: what is the basis that will be taken into account to move forward? I think that’s missing. .” He specified that the process involves building “a new legal architecture” and “redefining our relationship with the state.” “The debate is not quantitative, but qualitative.”
In the same way, and asking about the model of governance he would like, he asked for ‘a new parliamentary culture’. “The government has an absolute majority and we know it can take advantage of this to limit the debate. She must behave differently and encourage debate.”
