Nine years have passed since the wave of refugees began in 2015, and the transfer of people from primary care to state care is still a hot topic. This is also evident from current figures released by the Ministry of the Interior at the request of NEOS.
The Pinks wanted to know from Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) how often the states rejected a transfer between December 2020 and May 2024. The answer: exactly 102,200 times. The states have a relatively free hand in this respect, as the transfer of asylum seekers from basic care must take place in consultation between the federal and state governments.
Vienna at almost 200 percent, all others failed
With the exception of Vienna, which exceeds its admission quota by 197 percent, all federal states are accepting fewer people than they promised, NEOS criticizes. “The federal government looks on and then points the finger completely unfairly at Vienna,” says asylum spokeswoman Stephanie Krisper. In the federal capital, Deputy Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr, a NEOS politician, has been responsible for the integration area since November 2020.
Krisper called for “sanctions against those federal states that do not meet their quotas, so that they do not avoid their responsibility.” The pink asylum spokeswoman can also imagine compensation payments.
