Although the Greens generally support the EU’s Ukraine policy, the two representatives Thomas Waitz and Lena Schilling abstained from voting on a recent resolution. The resolution contained two demands that he said were “problematic” with regard to military neutrality, Waitz explained.
The resolution, which is not legally binding, obliges member states to supply every type of weapon for every type of use and to spend at least 0.25 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) on it. For him, this was “incompatible” with Austrian neutrality, Waitz explained on Saturday in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal”.
However, the MEP stressed that he “absolutely” supports Ukraine, which is why he only abstained from the vote – and did not vote against. Ukraine needs “considerably more than weapons”, and Austria should “do more”, Waitz demanded. The six FPÖ MEPs voted against, all other Austrians voted in favour.
Party comrade “very much” regrets the abstention
Green Party foreign policy spokeswoman Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic said on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that she “deeply regrets” the abstention. At this point, it is important to stand with Ukraine and “not send other signals to Russia. It is absolutely clear that militarily neutral Austria will not continue to supply weapons,” she wrote.
