Jeltzal sources explained that both groups have already held a meeting to “address and promote the stability and governability of our city.”
The municipal group of PNV at the Irun City Council announced that they have started negotiations with el PSE-EE for a possible coalition government between the two formations that is “strong” and “gives stability and progress” the city of Gipuzkoa, where the socialists govern in a minority. Jeltzale’s spokesman, Gorka Alvarezexplained via social networks that “when it comes to Irun”, his party “does not stop even in the summer.”
He explained that last Monday the first meeting took place with a negotiating committee of the Socialist Party of Irun to “talk about the political stability of the city”. “As we said on the first day, from the PNV we are ready to lend a hand in the current and future challenges that our city is facing. In September the new political direction will begin and we also want to be clear about what our position will be within the city council of Irun”, Álvarez said.
In this regard, he pointed out that there will be “future meetings” between Yeltzales and socialists and he was confident that “this will lead us to build a strong government for our city that will provide stability and move Irun forward.”
In 2020, the PNV jeltzale formation split from the PSE-EE in Irun, and since then the relationship between the two formations has been very tense. The breakup of the municipal government occurred when José Antonio Santano and Xabier Iridoi led the socialist and jeltzale groups of the city of Gipuzkoa.
In December last year, Cristina Laborda took over the post of mayor from Santano – the latter was appointed Secretary of State for Transport – and Álvarez took over from Iridoi as head of the Irun jeltzales. Once the corresponding replacements had taken place, both Álvarez and Laborda assured that they see the possibility of restoring the coalition between the two parties.
