Junts will ask for the plenary session of the inauguration to be suspended if Carles Puigdemont is arrested upon his return after more than six years in exile, and the ERC has indicated its willingness to accept this but to resume the plenary session “as soon as possible”.
After more than six years outside Catalonia, everything indicates that the Carles Puigdemont’s return is imminent. The former Catalan president wants to attend the plenary session of the investiture on Thursday. However, the decision entails great personal risks, which are now being faced immediate arrest.
Next Tuesday, the General Secretary of JxCat, Jordi Turul, has stated in statements to TV3 that his party is suspension of the plenary session of the investiture of Salvador Illa if the former president of the Generalitat is arrested upon his return to Catalonia to attend this parliamentary session.
Turull suggested that Puigdemont will return to Catalonia incognito in the coming dayswithout specifying the “time and place” of his return, because “it would be extremely naive to give details” of his plans and “make it easy for them to arrest him.”
If Puigdemont is arrested, as he himself assumes will happen because the Supreme Court does not apply the amnesty law to him, JxCat will ask the President of Parliament: Josep Rullto “suspend the plenary session” because it could not take place “under normal circumstances” as one of the deputies could not participate due to his arrest.
The Deputy General Secretary and Spokesperson of ERC, Marta Vilaltahas indicated its openness to accepting the suspension or postponement of the plenary session, but has opted to resume the session “as soon as possible”.
According to Vilalta, if the plenary session scheduled for that day is suspended, the investiture session should take place “as soon as possible”, since Catalan institutions “cannot be subject to the timing of the Supreme Court”.
Vilalta also has the “tense atmosphere that some are feeding’ from Junts against ERC, who they are trying to ‘blame’ for a possible arrest of Puigdemont. ‘This is unacceptable. We ask Junts to make a correction and apologize, because this is unbearable,’ he stressed.
At the end of July, the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont already confirmed his decision to return to Catalonia and attend the investiture debate in Parliament: “It is my duty to go to Parliament when there is an investiture debate. I will be there, President. I will be in Parliament. And only a coup d’état can prevent me from being there.”
Josep Rull, the president of the parliament, has proposed to hold the inauguration on Thursday, after having spoken to the representatives of the parties and verified that the socialist candidate has enough support to be sworn in as president. In the last hours, the ERC forces, as well as its youth, have supported their vote in favor of the socialist candidate.
