Dispute in Innsbruck – Search for nursing staff: Expensive trip to Vietnam

Date:

Innsbruck wants to recruit skilled workers for a nursing offensive in the Far East. The trip has been booked, but it is unclear who will drive. The opposition criticizes the project as “modern colonialism”: care models for families must first be expanded.

Recruiting staff from third countries: this is what the city of Innsbruck’s nursing strategy explicitly provides for – in addition to making working conditions more attractive and other measures to attract nursing staff.

Office worker Willis was a regular starter
A delegation trip to educational institutions and cooperation partners in Vietnam is now planned for this purpose. On Wednesday, the city council was concerned about the release of the estimated budget of around 10,000 euros. But as is so often the case, it gets bogged down in details.

In this particular case, it’s all about who goes with you. The minimum requirement of city councillors Markus Stoll (Das Neue Innsbruck) and Markus Lassenberger (FPÖ) was that at least one politician responsible for the department had to be present.

Willi and the CO₂ footprint
Initially, only one employee from the office of Deputy Mayor Georg Willi was nominated by the government. “He himself did not want to participate because of the CO₂ footprint that the trip entails,” Stoll reports when asked by the “Krone”. Because the government refused to respond to this, the FPÖ and Das Neue Innsbruck brought a minority vote into play: then the matter would have had to be decided in the city council. But that would only have been possible after the appointment had apparently already been booked.

Hasty search for compromises
The compromise was that an expert political representative would be nominated. The money was released with the votes of the governing parties SPÖ, Greens and YES. Alderman Stoll is critical of the project: “This is modern colonialism! The city must first expand the care models in families.”
