According to a media report, independent US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will withdraw his candidacy for the election at the end of this week.
He will endorse Republican candidate Donald Trump, ABC News reported Wednesday, citing insiders.
There was no immediate comment from Kennedy. His campaign had announced that the 70-year-old would address the nation in Arizona on Friday.
He will then talk about his next steps. The nephew of former President John F. Kennedy is considered to have no chance against Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris. Kennedy originally ran as a Democrat for the elections in early November.
The 70-year-old wanted to “address the nation,” his website said. It’s about the “current historical moment” and Kennedy’s “way forward.” Kennedy wants to speak in Phoenix, Arizona, where Trump is also making his campaign appearance on Friday (local time).
Kennedy’s vice presidential candidate Nicole Shanahan recently raised the issue of merging with former President Trump, who is seeking to return to the White House for the Republicans.
Shanahan explained in an interview that there were two options for Kennedy’s team: either stay in the race and risk a Democrat Kamala Harris winning the presidential election on Nov. 5. Or, support Trump now. It remained unclear to what extent Shanahan discussed positioning with Kennedy. Trump subsequently told CNN that he was open to a role for nonpartisans in his potential administration.
The nephew of legendary ex-president John F. Kennedy has no chance at all in the presidential election – in the polls he only gets an average of about 5 percent. However, both Democrats and Republicans are watching him with concern. The election comes down to a neck-and-neck race between Trump and Harris. Kennedy could give both parties decisive percentage points. It currently seems that his candidacy is doing Trump even more damage – a withdrawal of Kennedy would therefore be good news for the Republican.
As an activist and lawyer, Kennedy championed environmental causes such as clean water. In recent years, the avowed anti-vaccination activist has been widely criticized by Democrats and members of his family for spreading conspiracy myths and contacts with far-right politicians.
