Linz: Luger successor – Hajart and Raml also want to become mayor

Date:

It is about the successor of Klaus Luger (SPÖ) as mayor of the city of Linz. The black city representative has now decided: “I want to become mayor.” His blue city senate colleague Michael Raml announced his candidacy in May.

After the resignation of Linz Mayor Klaus Luger (SPÖ), the city needs a new mayor – and one thing is already certain: there will be no shortage of candidates. As reported in our Sunday edition, the SPÖ is sending Dietmar Prammer (50), who has long been regarded as the crown prince, into the race.

He is currently a member of the Linz Senate. Deputy Mayor Martin Hajart (41) of the ÖVP also has a permanent place in the city council. His candidacy was expected and there were further talks with his family this weekend. And now the decision has been made. Hajart on Sunday afternoon to the “Krone”: “Yes, I want to be mayor.”

“For me it’s all about a new style”
This is a historic opportunity for the ÖVP. Until recently, it had little chance in the capital; in the 2021 elections, it only achieved 16.4%. After the Brucknerhaus scandal involving Klaus Luger, the black man now feels the morning air in red Linz. Vice Mayor Martin Hajart says: “For me, it’s all about a new style.”

If Hajart were to win the elections, he would have the largest faction in the city council against him, the SPÖ (43.7% in the ’21 elections). That is not a problem, he says: “Party politics play no role for me. It is about the case, it is about Linz,” says the married father of a daughter and a son.

Alderman Raml announced his candidacy in May
It is expected that liberal alderman Michael Raml (37) will also enter the ring to succeed Luger. The doctor of law announced during an FPÖ event in May that he would run for the next regular elections in 2027. Due to the mayor’s resignation, this schedule has now been postponed.
