Sánchez has chosen the third weekend of November, a year earlier than usual, to hold the congress that will renew the leadership of the Socialist Party. The president of the government will stand for re-election as secretary general.
Pedro SanchezPresident of the Spanish Government and Secretary General of the PSOE, has chosen November 15, 16 and 17 to Federal Congress of the contest, in Seville. The appointment will serve to renew the leadership team and relaunch the party, once the electoral cycle is over, and Sánchez will opt for re-election as Socialist leader.
The congress will be officially convened on Saturday, September 7, at the PSOE Federal Committee, as announced by Esther Peña, spokesperson for the Socialist Executive.
“The entire executive branch has expressed our support to him and we have made him aware of the need to continue leading the party in this new cycle, to continue consolidating the enormous progress made by our country,” Peña said at a press conference at party headquarters.
After the Federal Congress, the territorial congresses will take place in late 2024 and early 2025, where regional leaders will be elected.
“In the PSOE there is debate. When the PSOE debates, Spain debates. We expect a broad participation from the more than 4,000 socialist groups that exist throughout Spain, to which our 170,000 activists will be able to contribute their vision,” he stressed.
The last federal congress was held in Valencia in October 2021, so the celebration of the next one has been brought forward by a year by Sánchez.
