Shortly before the National Council elections, Lower Austrian deputy Udo Landbauer and Green Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler engaged in a heated verbal argument. Gewessler is said to have hidden an interim report on the Lobau Tunnel from the state of Lower Austria – even though the state has a party position in the procedure!
In the daily newspaper “Der Standard”, Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler called the Lobau tunnel a “natural destruction project”. The content of this statement was based on the results of a strategic assessment of the project by the Federal Environment Agency.
The state of Lower Austria is also showing great interest in these first results, which according to its own statements in the procedure has been granted “party status”, but has not received any information about the interim report.
Landbauer’s demand
The FPÖ state deputy Udo Landbauer, who is responsible for transport in the largest state, addressed the Green Minister directly yesterday. In a letter to the “Krone”, Landbauer calls on Gewessler to “immediately make the interim report public”, to follow the consultation route with those involved and to return to a legally conducted procedure.
Moreover, it is simply incompatible with any supposed objectivity to describe as a “nature destruction project” a project that has been assessed and found to be environmentally friendly by your authorities and the courts. In doing so, Gewessler not only greatly damages the reputation of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, but also confidence in the administration and the judiciary.
The Green Minister promptly counterattacks: “The fact that Udo Landbauer of all people, who has rejected every invitation to come up with alternatives for years, is now complaining about the lack of information is hard to beat in terms of absurdity.” Intensive work is underway on the strategic review of transport. As soon as the results are available, they will be published immediately.
Just because you don’t like the truth, you can’t denigrate those who tell the truth. “Overall, Udo Landbauer would do well to end his ghost ride on climate policy before he hits the wall at the age of 150. That would be best for nature, the climate and us people,” the Green minister adds.
