The president of the Basque PP has accused the Lehendakari of “shifting responsibility”, while it is his responsibility that Lanbide “is not a sieve for smart people”.

The lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, replied to the president of the Basque PP, Carlos Iturgaiz, that “it is not appropriate to distort reality to take political advantage” of the fraud cases related to the Income Guarantee Income (RGI), and has asked that “it does not make the mistake and demagoguery of insinuating the link of fraud to migrants” because it is “unfair” and “projects a stigma on migrants that only hurts”.
The Lehendakari, who was in full control of the Basque government, answered the question of Carlos Iturgaiz, parliamentarian of the PP+C, about the operation announced last week by the National Police, in which 23 people were detained on charges of integrating of a plot to forge documents to retrieve the RGI.
The president of the Basque PP, Carlos Iturgaiz, has accused the Lehendakari of doing “an exercise in political escapism, of evading and minimizing” this case, because the responsibility of the Basque government is that Lanbide “is not a sieve for savages and profiteers, be they Senegalese, Bilbao or Swedish”.
The Lehendakari replied to Iturgaiz that “fraud is always serious” and that the Basque government “will always prosecute it”, but pointed out that the question, the justification and the statements made in this matter by his party point to a “disturbing” direction .
“You know that issues like this are extremely sensitive. Frankly, Mr Iturgaiz, it is not appropriate to distort reality to take political advantage of these matters,” he defended.
In that sense, he has warned the PP that “it cannot be said that this fraud was a simple deception”. “You confirm that members of the Basque government are downplaying the events. Nobody from the Basque government has downplayed these events, on the contrary,” he emphasized.
