Chinese leaders claim to have noticed an intensification of espionage activities by Western states and are now warning their own people about “beautiful women” and “handsome men”.
On the online service WeChat, the Ministry of State Security on Wednesday accused foreign secret services of setting up “love traps” to lure Chinese students. According to the data, foreign spies used job advertisements or even dating platforms to lure young students into handing over “important research results” or other confidential information. It is also possible that agents disguised themselves as university lecturers, researchers or scientific advisers for “targeted infiltration.”
British MI6 in the spotlight
In addition to romantic relationships, young Chinese should convert through lucrative job opportunities abroad, it is said. The authority did not reveal which states should use such methods in the first place. However, a similar warning in June said Britain’s MI6 had recruited a Chinese couple working for the Beijing government for espionage activities.
Under the presidency of President Xi Jinping, warnings have increased in China about alleged foreign attempts to prevent the country’s economic and political rise.
