Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) is attracting attention with an attempt to increase the penalties for families who do not want to integrate. This would have consequences for parents who do not support the integration of their children in Lower Austrian schools and who do not recognize the authority of teachers.
Mikl-Leitner: “Faust law and Sharia law have no place in schools. We will not win the battle against political Islam with purely cuddly education.” Schools do not have the capacity to deal with “young religious warriors” and “self-appointed moral guardians.” obligation to cooperate with parents. The state governor wants to increase this fine more than fivefold to more than 2,500 euros. Mikl-Leitner: “Parents have a duty to participate in the upbringing of children. If the parental duty is not met, a report will be filed and sanctions will be imposed. In addition to higher penalties, social benefits will also be reduced.”
The situation in schools is said to be dramatic. Fathers are unwilling to shake hands with teachers and talk to them. Girls are also often not allowed to attend physical education classes. However, punishments would still only be the last resort if other measures, such as discussions between teachers and parents or psychological counselling at school, are not effective.
SPÖ refused
When asked how the cooperation with Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) would work in everyday life, the state governor had only words of praise. However, she clearly rejected Landbauer’s proposal to consider speed limits of 150 km/h on some sections of Lower Austrian motorways in the future: in her opinion, 130 km/h would be a good solution. However, jointly implemented measures such as the €1,000 care voucher, from which 47,000 families have already benefited, showed that the coalition in Lower Austria also brought important innovations. From Mikl-Leitner’s point of view, the SPÖ refused to participate in the coalition negotiations.
