The state government of Salzburg wants to oblige refugees to do charity work.
Black-Blue wants to oblige asylum seekers to do charity work for communities and associations. A corresponding application will be discussed in the state parliament on Wednesday. In future, asylum seekers will have to sign a ‘code’ that provides clear rules. It also states that everyone who applies for asylum is obliged to do charity work in the service of the general public, for example in communities or associations.
Similar model in Vorarlberg
If this charity work is refused, the asylum seekers’ pocket money must be reduced as part of the basic provision. The charity activity must also offer the opportunity to earn extra money during the asylum procedure. “We need new rules that affect not only the rights, but above all the duties of asylum seekers,” ÖVP club chairman Wolfgang Mayer explains the application. A similar regulation already exists in Vorarlberg. However, there are no sanctions for those who refuse to comply.
The Salzburg application is very general in its exact rules. The state government hopes that the code will ensure that refugees are integrated more quickly and that asylum seekers are better accepted by the population.
