Putin expands army – Kremlin speaks of “extremely hostile environment”

Date:

Russia is now expanding its armed forces to become the world’s second-largest, a move Moscow blames on growing threats on its borders.

“This is due to the number of threats that exist on the periphery of our borders,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday. “It is caused by the extremely hostile environment on our western borders and the instability on our eastern borders.” This requires appropriate measures, Peskov added.

President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered the regular size of the Russian army to be increased by 180,000 soldiers to 1.5 million active-duty soldiers.

This would make it the world’s largest military after China, ahead of the United States and India in the number of active combat soldiers, according to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Russia had recently criticized its neighbors over Finland’s accession to NATO and accused Japan of increasing militarization with U.S. support.
