Republican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump made his first campaign appearance since the alleged assassination attempt on his life. Speaking in Flint, Michigan, on Tuesday, he drew a connection between Sunday’s incident at his Florida golf course and his call for steep tariffs on imported cars from Mexico and China.
“And you ask, why am I getting shot? Only great presidents get shot,” Trump has presented himself as a defender of the American auto industry. If he doesn’t win the Nov. 5 election, “there will be no jobs in the auto industry,” the 78-year-old said. Flint was once a hub for the industry before numerous factories were forced to close.
Head-to-head racing
Trump and Democratic candidate Harris are locked in a neck-and-neck race for the White House. Harris spoke to her rival by phone Tuesday and expressed relief at the mild outcome of the alleged assassination attempt. Harris and Trump had a “cordial and brief” phone conversation, the White House said.
“No place for political violence”
Harris said during an appearance in Pennsylvania that she wanted to hear if Trump was OK. “And I told him what I’ve said publicly: There is no place for political violence in our country,” Harris said in an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
Like Michigan, Pennsylvania is one of the swing states that will be particularly hotly contested in the November elections. Polls predict an extremely close election outcome. After the assassination attempt, Trump accused Harris and President Joe Biden of using their choice of words to incite violence against him. The right-wing populist is known for inflaming the political climate with polemical statements.
“Attempted murder”
Biden and Harris had already expressed relief on Sunday that Trump was unharmed in the incident. Earlier, a man had been arrested in Florida for stationing himself armed with a gun on Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach. According to investigators, he was a few hundred meters away from the ex-president. The man did not fire a shot. Investigators suspect “attempted murder.”
