The Innsbruck Public Prosecutor’s Office has dropped the investigation into Tyrolean deputy governor Georg Dornauer (SPÖ), who received free tickets from the Tyrolean Football Association (TFV) for a European Championship match between the Netherlands and Austria in Berlin at the end of June – the “Krone” reported.
The prosecutor confirmed on Tuesday that the trip was “justified for business purposes” and that “no undue advantage” resulted from it.
Since Dornauer was responsible for sports affairs within the black-red Tyrolean state government, the prosecutor saw that there were business reasons for the trip. The chairman of the Tyrolean state party SPÖ had previously been asked for comment by the Innsbruck public prosecutor’s office after anonymous reports had been received about the “acceptance of advantages for the purpose of influencing” by the public prosecutor’s office for economic affairs and corruption.
At the European Championship match in Berlin
Dornauer was offered four tickets for the European Championship match in June and accepted them. In addition to the deputy governor, two of his office staff and a club employee of SPÖ Tirol received the tickets. The travel expenses for himself and his two office staff were paid from the available funds at the government office.
After the case became public, TFV chairman Josef Geisler stressed that Dornauer had not approached the association on his own. The State Sports Council “always had an open ear for the association and the clubs”. The tickets were provided as a ‘small thank you’, so to speak. Dornauer argued that it was an official visit in his capacity as a member of the State Sports Council. In addition to the match, there were also meetings with TFV officials and volunteers in Berlin.
Dornauer paid money back
After the case became public – and Dornauer had been heavily criticized by the opposition – Dornauer refunded the EM tickets and the TFV refunded the 800 euros. Dornauer’s lawyer Mathias Kapferer was convinced that there would be “no criminal basis” anymore. Dornauer also said: “I never doubted that he would be hired.”
