Political blow: German Greens leadership resigns as a unit

Date:

Political shock for the German Greens: As the two chairmen, Ricarda Lang (30) and Omid Nouripour (49), announced on Wednesday, the party leadership as a whole is resigning.

“We have come to the conclusion: a fresh start is necessary. “Sunday’s election results in Brandenburg are a testimony to the deepest crisis our party has faced in ten years,” Nouripour said at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday morning.

A series of election defeats for the Greens
The Greens recently suffered major defeats in state elections in the eastern German states of Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, as well as in the European elections in June, and were partially expelled from state parliaments.

Lang: “Not the time to stay glued to your seat”
We now need “new faces to lead the party out of this crisis,” Lang said. The election of a new executive at the federal party conference in November should be a “building block for the strategic realignment of this party.” Lang added: “This is not the time to sit on your chair – this is the time to take responsibility and we are taking that responsibility by making a fresh start possible.”

Lang and Nouripour have led the party since early 2022. They were supposed to stay in power until at least the end of 2024. They did not comment on her successor. State Secretary for Economic Affairs Franziska Brantner and Bundestag member Felix Banaszak are apparently in talks. Brantner is a close confidant of Economy Minister Robert Habeck, who could lead the Greens as their candidate for chancellor in the next federal election. Banaszak was previously leader of the Green Party in North Rhine-Westphalia and is a key brain of the left wing.

In addition to Lang and Nouripour, the previous Green Board also included deputy party chairmen Pegah Edalatian and Heiko Knopf, general manager Emily Büning and federal treasurer Frederic Carpenter. According to Lang’s information, the board should remain in office until the new elections at the party congress.

SPD thanks you for your cooperation
SPD chairmen Saskia Esken and Lars Klingbeil thanked the outgoing leadership of the Green Party for their cooperation. “We have always discussed and clarified matters in a reliable and trusting manner at the top of our two parties,” a joint statement said. “Despite some differences in content, this cooperation was very pleasant because it was also humanly resilient.” We would therefore like to thank Nouripour and Lang “from the bottom of our hearts.”

They make no statements about possible effects on the traffic light coalition consisting of the SPD, Greens and FDP.
