The municipalities and the federal government finance the organization of the vote. There are approximately 10,400 districts nationwide serving 6.34 million eligible voters. The costs also depend on the latter.
Democracy has its price. Carrying out the elections for the National Council costs the federal and local governments a total of approximately 23 million euros. The municipalities must finance approximately ten million euros from their own pockets. They receive approximately 13 million euros from the federal government through the statutory cost reimbursement. This amount results from the number of eligible voters (6.34 million): Each person receives a compensation of two euros.
Between 33 and 100 euros for election assessors
Depending on the opening hours of the polling stations, the municipalities pay the election inspectors a fee. That is 33 euros if the polling station is open for a maximum of three hours, 66 euros if the polling station is open for a maximum of six hours and 100 euros if the polling station is open for more than six hours. The additional planned emptying of the mailboxes by the post office on Saturdays costs approximately 830,000 euros.
In addition to the organizational costs, there are many campaign costs. They do come from the party coffers, but the majority is tax money. In the two and a half months until election day, the parties may each spend a maximum of 8.66 million euros.
Only the Greens and Neos mention the expenditure
ÖVP, FPÖ and SPÖ did not want to announce in advance how much they would spend. Only Neos and the Greens quantified their planned expenditure. The Neos have budgeted 3.1 million euros, the Greens five million. There have been repeated violations in the past.
