Trade continues to fight – Will: “Only Austria collects this tax!”

Date:

In the tense economic situation in Austria, nerves are on edge: “Trusting politics is the biggest mistake,” says Rainer Will, director of the Austrian Trade Association in the interview with krone.tv. The issue of rental prices is also a thorn in the side of many retailers: “This law only exists in Austria. “It puts particular pressure on stationary retail,” Will criticizes.

Over the past decade, retailers have proven how resilient they are to crises. But the fatigue is great. “I can congratulate every entrepreneur who has come this far. The traders are the real heroes of the crisis”, Will emphasizes, emphasizing that they must continue their activities despite the most adverse circumstances. The challenges of recent years have pushed the sector to its limits. “While civil servants work in sheltered workshops and pay increases often pass them by without a trace, retailers, restaurateurs and hoteliers fight for survival,” says Will. Above all, he praises the loyalty of entrepreneurs towards their employees: “In addition to their own family, it is the second family that has to be guided through these crises.”

Alarming customs borders
A burning issue is the duty-free limit of 150 euros, under which third countries such as China can send goods to the European Union duty-free. “This loophole greatly undermines European traders. “It means that, for example, a projector with a value of 1,254 euros was collected, while the value of the goods was only 54 euros,” explains the head of the trade association. This practice not only endangers domestic trade, but also the European economy.

But the picture of the future is bleak: “The dealers are hardened, but they are also hungry because the crisis funds have been used up,” Will explains. He is particularly concerned about the excessive bureaucracy: “If 15% of GDP is just wasted on paperwork, then all alarm bells should be ringing.” His suggestion: Every politician should gain experience in running a business to understand what daily life in the economy really looks like.

The need for action is urgent
Trade needs urgent reforms to survive in global competition. Will emphasizes that continued support from third countries not only undermines domestic trade, but also creates a huge revenue problem. “The money is not coming out of the pot,” he warns. Will is convinced that without clear measures the situation will continue to escalate: “We cannot allow our dealers to suffer under the existing conditions!” Politicians must not only respond, but also proactively develop solutions. We need people in the next government who will take action and not just make empty promises.”
