According to media reports, Russia’s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Ivanovich Antonov, has ended his stay in the United States and returned to Moscow. The career diplomat, who is considered a hawk, has headed the Russian mission in Washington since 2017.
“The Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Ivanovich Antonov, completes his assignment in Washington and returns to Moscow,” state news agency TASS reported, citing the Foreign Ministry.
Antonov declared in July that his term was coming to an end. This comes at a time when relations between the two nations are more tense than they have been in decades. Nothing was known about his successor.
Before heading to Washington, Antonov was known as an astute arms control negotiator who had led Russian delegations to a number of international and strategic arms talks. In an interview with TASS in August, Antonov said Russia was willing to consider an arms control deal with Washington.
Hardliners and Putin supporters
Born in Siberia, 69-year-old Antonov was considered a hardliner, but was also capable of making compromises. Antonov’s position on the war in Ukraine showed unwavering support for President Vladimir Putin’s actions.
“It is clear to us that the enemy will be defeated and victory will belong to Russia,” Antonov said in an unrelated post on the messaging app Telegram on Saturday. He commented on the capture of the Ukrainian mining town of Wuhledar by Russian troops.
