The mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz has appreciated “the effort and courage of the victims and their role as agents of change” to build a “more peaceful” society.
The Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Maider Etxebarriaon Tuesday praised the “courage” of the victims of terrorism and acknowledged their role in society, while warning of the need to continue to prevent violence “and fight any attempt to trivialize it.”
Etxebarria made this reflection in his speech during the inauguration of the International Conference of Victims of Terrorism that brings together more than two days 300 people in Vitoria-Gasteiz and in which King Felipe VI participates.
The mayor believes that holding this conference in the city is a “milestone and a source of pride” as it transforms the city into “the global standard-bearer of democratic values and the fight against terrorism,” which has helped achieve its opinion the work of the Memorial Center for Victims of Terrorism.
“Terrorism has led to death, extortion, threats, terror and broken families in Spain for decades, mainly thanks to ETA and its entourage. For too long we have been in the spotlight as we have suffered the blows of barbarism. We will never forget that spiral. of hatred. The bodies covered in sheets, the collective hysteria. Fortunately, today the world looks at us for a completely different reason,” he noted.
Etxebarria has appreciated “the effort and courage of the victims and their role as agents of change” to build a “more peaceful and resistant society on an international scale” that allows “to look to the future with hope.”
